SPJ-WA seeks new board members!

We’re looking for journalists from around the Evergreen state who want to help us promote, improve and celebrate news and practitioners, in Western Washington and beyond.

Through events, content and community efforts, SPJ Western Washington offers resources, advocates for journalists and shares coverage about how journalism is changing our world. But we need active and engaged members of our 11-member board of directors to do it, and we’re set to have about a few vacant seats that need to be filled.

Board members sign up for two-year terms. Our board is responsible for enhancing membership, operating annual journalism awards and scholarships, and providing programming and resources for journalists in our state. For those early in their careers, board membership is a great way to network and develop skills. For those later in their careers, it’s a wonderful way to give back and help shape the future success of our work.

Time commitment varies, but typically we have an hour-long meeting each month, engage in conversations and idea-sharing on our What’s App channel, and serve on at least one committee. Those in the past year have been finance/fundraising, programming, social media/graphics and administration. This might average out to about five hours a month.

Please help us fill our vacant seats and serve journalists in this state! We’re looking for applications that include a brief description of your skills and history in journalism and service and why you’d like to join the board, plus some ideas of what you want to accomplish on the board. What could we do better? What do you bring to the table?

Write a few paragraphs and submit your application to spjwash@gmail.com by no 8 a.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

The current board will vote on submissions and announce the makeup of the new board shortly after. At that time, we’ll introduce the new board members, as well as elect officers.

Reminder: You must be a member of the national SPJ organization to serve on our board. Click here to sign up and make sure you indicate that you’re in the Western Washington chapter.
