Our first continuing education event is at the University of Washington on Feb. 11: “J-School in a Night.” Reserve your spot. (SPJ and AAJA members get in free, $10 otherwise.)

J School In a Night has something for everyone. Attendees can choose 3 out of 4 offered sessions taught by working journalists across a variety of media channels and expertise including newspapers, radio, magazines and lifestyle websites:

  • Ethics: Has a source asked to review your story or their quotes before publication? Have you been told you cannot access a meeting or public document you believe you should be able to? In this session you will get a whirlwind guide to common, current ethical quandaries and tips on how to navigate. Attendees will leave this session with a better sense of what your rights and responsibilities are.
  • Story structure: A refresher on common story structures will help you execute clear, snappy and polished stories. We also touch on how to craft a structure that is a best fit for various channels, such as radio, web, newspaper, magazines and beyond.
  • Photography: Obtain tips directly from a professional news photographer about how to make strong, eye-grabbing images with any camera or phone you have on hand.
  • Pitching: We’ll blast through an informational session geared toward useful takeaways to help you pitch stories and content to editors you want to work with. From how to shape your pitch to what editors hate to see in a pitch, you’ll get inside intel that will help you land assignments.
